About the game

Carcassonne: Gold Rush transports the classic tile-laying formula to the 19th-century American West, where players send explorers to gold mines in search of nuggets while cowboys, trappers, and railways shape the growing landscape. As in the original Carcassonne, you draw and place tiles to build the map, then place followers to claim scoring features: but placement here can let you snatch gold from rivals or leave you with fool's gold instead. It plays two to five players in about thirty-five minutes, keeping sessions brisk. As the second entry in the Carcassonne Around the World series, it offers a fresh regional twist on a beloved formula.

Hobbli's Notes

If your group already loves Carcassonne, Gold Rush is an easy, breezy variant with a fun gold-grabbing twist that adds a little extra bite to tile placement. It doesn't reinvent the core game, so it's best positioned as a nice change of scenery rather than a must-have upgrade. Still, the quick playtime and familiar rules make it an easy addition to any collection of tile-layers.

What we like

  • Familiar, accessible Carcassonne tile-laying gameplay for new and veteran players alike.
  • Fresh American West theme and gold-mining twist add variety.
  • Quick thirty-five-minute playtime suits casual sessions.
  • Easy to teach thanks to the well-known base Carcassonne ruleset.

Keep in mind

  • Mostly appeals to players who already enjoy the Carcassonne series.
  • Limited strategic depth compared to heavier tile-placement games.
  • Area-majority scoring can feel repetitive after many sessions.
