About the game
Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy is a revised edition of the acclaimed 4X space strategy game, in which players lead an interstellar civilization exploring, researching, and building fleets to compete for the galaxy. Combat, diplomacy, and technology all play a role as you expand across a modular hex map. The 2020 revision brings updated graphic design, new miniatures, and fine-tuned gameplay to the original 2011 release. Victory is determined by accumulated points from territory, technology, and combat.
Hobbli's Notes
Eclipse offers satisfying 4X space exploration and combat in a more manageable timeframe than epics like Twilight Imperium, while still delivering deep strategic choices. The asymmetric species and modular map keep repeated plays feeling fresh. The 2020 revision polishes an already well-loved design with better components and balance. It remains one of the top choices for groups wanting a serious space strategy game without a full-day commitment.
What we like
- Satisfying 4X exploration and combat in a manageable timeframe.
- Asymmetric species with genuinely distinct strategies.
- Strong modular map and technology tree variety.
- Excellent component and miniature quality.
Keep in mind
- Still a long, complex game with significant setup.
- Downtime can build up with higher player counts.
- Combat and diplomacy can occasionally create a runaway leader.
Who it's for
Strategy gamers who enjoy space 4X games but want something shorter than Twilight Imperium, in groups of 2 to 6, ages 12 and up.
