About the game
War of the Ring: Second Edition pits the Free Peoples against the Shadow Armies of Sauron in an asymmetric struggle across Middle-earth. While armies clash for territory, the true fate of the game rests on the Fellowship's secret journey to destroy the One Ring. Action Dice drive movement, recruitment, and political shifts, while Event Cards bring key moments from the story to life. One side can win through military conquest, the other through completing or foiling the Ring's quest.
Hobbli's Notes
War of the Ring is widely considered one of the finest Lord of the Rings adaptations and asymmetric wargames ever made. It masterfully captures the novel's central tension between open warfare and the hidden, desperate quest to destroy the Ring. The asymmetry between the two sides creates genuinely different play experiences and strategic puzzles. It demands a long session and a serious group, but rewards that investment with a deeply thematic experience.
What we like
- Brilliant asymmetric design capturing the tension of the source material.
- Deep decision space built around the hidden movement of the Ring.
- Strong thematic immersion for Lord of the Rings fans.
- Team play options help manage downtime for larger groups.
Keep in mind
- Long playtime running several hours per game.
- High rules overhead and complexity for newcomers.
- Needs a dedicated, evenly matched group to shine.
Who it's for
2 to 4 experienced wargamers or Tolkien fans willing to invest a long session together, ages 13 and up, works especially well as a head-to-head duel.
