About the game
Slay the Spire: The Board Game is a cooperative deckbuilding adaptation of the popular video game, sending players crafting a unique deck as they fight bizarre creatures and hunt for powerful relics. Each character starts with simple cards and abilities that grow and change over the course of a run. The game follows a rogue-like structure, meaning defeat sends you back to the start with lessons learned rather than a saved position. Success means fighting through each Act to eventually defeat the final Boss.
Hobbli's Notes
This board game adaptation does a faithful job of translating the video game's addictive deckbuilding tension into a tactile format. The rogue-like structure, where death means starting over, is a bold design choice that fits the source material but may surprise players used to campaign-style survival. As a cooperative deckbuilder it holds up well on its own merits, offering satisfying risk-reward decisions each run.
What we like
- Faithful translation of the video game's deckbuilding tension.
- Strong solo and cooperative play options.
- Rogue-like structure encourages experimentation and replay.
- Lower complexity than many other campaign-style crawlers.
Keep in mind
- Rogue-like permadeath can feel harsh to newcomers.
- Deck variance can create swings in difficulty.
- May feel repetitive across many runs without added content.
Who it's for
Fans of the Slay the Spire video game and cooperative deckbuilders, playable solo or in groups up to 4, ages 12 and up.
