About the game

Twilight Struggle is a two-player card-driven game simulating the forty-five year standoff between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Players use cards for either their historical event or their operations value to place influence, trigger coups, and fight for control of regions across the world map. Subsystems handle the Space Race and nuclear tensions, which can even end the game outright. The struggle plays out from the ruins of postwar Europe in 1945 to the end of the Cold War in 1989.

Hobbli's Notes

Twilight Struggle has long been regarded as one of the best two-player strategy games ever designed. The constant push and pull of deciding whether to play a card for its event or its operations points creates a masterclass in tension and tough decisions. Its historical event cards bring genuine texture and flavor to nearly every turn. It remains a benchmark title in the card-driven wargame genre nearly two decades after release.

What we like

  • Legendary tension between playing cards for events versus operations.
  • Deep, well-researched historical theming of the Cold War.
  • Tight, carefully balanced two-player design.
  • Endlessly replayable due to the variety of event cards.

Keep in mind

  • Strictly a two-player game with no scaling options.
  • Steep learning curve with dense card text to learn.
  • Sudden-death endings can occasionally feel abrupt.
