About the game
Lisboa is set in the aftermath of the devastating 1755 Lisbon earthquake, casting players as nobles helping the Marquis of Pombal rebuild the city. Played on a real map of downtown Lisbon, players place and swap cards to schedule hearings, gain character favors, construct iconic buildings, and open stores for income. A dense web of resources, influence, licenses, church power, and workers, must be juggled carefully as the treasure-driven economy shifts throughout the game. Designer Vital Lacerda delivers one of his most intricate historical euros for 1-4 players.
Hobbli's Notes
Lisboa is often cited as one of Vital Lacerda's finest and most demanding designs: the historical theme is deeply embedded in every system, from the treasury mechanics to the iconic buildings. It rewards players who love puzzling through interlocking systems, but it's a serious commitment in both time and mental effort.
What we like
- Deeply thematic historical setting tied closely to real mechanics.
- Intricate multi-resource economy rewards careful long-term planning.
- High-quality components and a real Lisbon city map add immersion.
- Strong solo mode for a game of this depth.
Keep in mind
- Very high complexity creates a steep learning curve for new players.
- Long playtime and dense rulebook may overwhelm casual groups.
- Significant downtime possible at higher player counts.
Who it's for
Best for veteran euro-gamers aged 14+ who enjoy historical theming and complex interlocking systems; suited to a dedicated group of 1-4 players.
