About the game
Age of Innovation is a standalone entry in the Terra Mystica universe, where twelve asymmetric factions terraform a varied landscape to build and connect settlements into thriving cities. Players upgrade buildings to unlock resources, advance through tech-tree style innovations, and construct schools, workshops, and palaces to develop their civilization. Faction, homeland, and ability combinations can be mixed each game, ensuring high variability across plays. This is a heavy euro for 1-5 players demanding careful long-term planning over a 200-minute session.
Hobbli's Notes
Fans of Terra Mystica will find Age of Innovation a welcome refinement: more modular, more flexible faction combinations, and a tech-track structure that smooths out some of the original's rigidity. It remains an unapologetically heavy, brain-burning euro best suited to committed strategy groups.
What we like
- Highly modular faction, homeland, and ability combinations boost replayability.
- Deep resource-conversion engine rewards long-term planning.
- Strong solo mode for a game of this complexity.
- Refines and streamlines mechanisms from the beloved Terra Mystica system.
Keep in mind
- Very high complexity and long playtime limit its accessibility.
- Significant rules overhead before new players can play competitively.
- Limited direct conflict may not satisfy players wanting confrontation.
Who it's for
Best for experienced euro-gamers aged 14+ who enjoy terraforming, resource conversion, and long strategic games; suited to dedicated groups of up to 5 players.
