About the game
Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers is a standalone entry in the Carcassonne series set in the Stone Age, where players place tiles to build forests, rivers, lakes, and meadows instead of the usual cities and roads. Meeples become hunters, gatherers, or fishermen depending on where they're placed, scoring points as regions are completed or, in the case of rivers, at the end of the game. It preserves the beloved tile-laying core of Carcassonne while offering fresh terrain types and scoring twists for series fans.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's team enjoys how this variant refreshes the classic Carcassonne formula with new terrain and animal-based scoring twists, like tigers negating other animals in a meadow. It's simple enough for newcomers yet offers enough novelty to appeal to Carcassonne veterans looking for something different. A great standalone tile-layer for two to five players.
What we like
- Fresh terrain types and scoring twists on the classic Carcassonne formula.
- Easy to teach, especially for players who already know Carcassonne.
- Quick 40-minute playtime suits casual play.
- Solid production with clean, thematic tile art.
Keep in mind
- Not a huge departure for players already tired of tile-laying games.
- Some new mechanics, like animal effects, add extra rules overhead.
Who it's for
Great for families and casual gamers aged 8+, playing well with 2-5 players in about 40 minutes; ideal for fans of the original Carcassonne wanting a fresh take.
