About the game
The Castles of Burgundy is set in medieval France, where players build up a princedom by placing settlement tiles, trading goods along the river, and working silver mines. Each round, players roll dice and use the results to select and place tiles into matching regions on their player board, with worker tokens available to adjust unlucky rolls. The game unfolds across five phases of five rounds each, with bonus scoring throughout. The player with the most victory points at the end wins.
Hobbli's Notes
The Castles of Burgundy is a Stefan Feld classic beloved for how it balances luck and control. The dice-driven tile placement gives just enough randomness to keep things interesting while still rewarding careful planning and adaptation. Its brisk turns and elegant five-phase structure make it approachable for newer euro gamers while still offering depth for veterans. It has rightly earned its place as a modern gateway-to-heavier-games classic.
What we like
- Elegant tile-placement puzzle with satisfying dice mitigation.
- Quick turns keep downtime low despite strategic depth.
- High replayability from variable board and tile setups.
- Accessible complexity that scales well for mixed groups.
Keep in mind
- Dice rolling introduces luck some strategy gamers may dislike.
- Limited direct interaction can feel solitaire-like.
- Tile availability can feel restrictive, especially at two players.
