About the game
Blokus is a classic abstract strategy game where players race to place as many of their 21 colored, Tetris-like pieces on the board as possible. The only rule: each new piece must touch one of your existing pieces, but only at the corners, never along an edge. The result is a deceptively simple game with surprising spatial depth as the board fills and options shrink. A built-in solitaire variant lets one player try to place every piece in a single sitting.
Hobbli's Notes
Blokus is a timeless family classic: the corner-touching rule is one of the cleverest, most elegant constraints in tabletop gaming, and it genuinely challenges both kids and adults. It belongs on every family game shelf.
What we like
- Extremely easy to teach in just a couple of minutes.
- Deep spatial strategy hidden behind very simple rules.
- Colorful, tactile pieces are appealing to kids and adults alike.
- Quick 30-minute playtime fits any game night.
Keep in mind
- Can end in blocking situations that frustrate younger or newer players.
- Two-player games feel less balanced than the full four-player experience.
- Limited variability since the board and rules never change.
Who it's for
Ideal for families with kids 7 and up; works equally well as a light brain-teaser for adults, best with 2 to 4 players.
