About the game
Patchwork is a fast, elegant two-player puzzle game where players compete to build the most efficient patchwork quilt on a personal 9x9 board. On each turn, a player buys one of the three closest patches using buttons as currency, then places it anywhere on their board without overlapping. Time spent purchasing and placing patches advances a shared time track, and falling behind grants extra turns, creating a clever tempo-based tension. The player with the highest button count and fewest empty squares at game's end wins this charming spatial puzzle.
Hobbli's Notes
Patchwork is one of the best two-player games in the hobby, full stop. Uwe Rosenberg's tempo mechanic, where being behind on the time track grants extra turns, is an elegant piece of design that keeps both players constantly engaged. Its short playtime and low complexity make it a fantastic gateway game or palate cleanser between heavier titles. We recommend it enthusiastically for date nights and quick two-player sessions alike.
What we like
- Elegant tempo mechanic keeps both players engaged throughout.
- Short playtime fits easily into any evening.
- Satisfying spatial puzzle with tactile components.
- Easy to teach to non-gamers.
Keep in mind
- Strictly two-player only, no scaling for larger groups.
- Limited long-term depth compared to heavier strategy games.
- Can feel repetitive after many plays without variants.
