About the game

Ubongo is a real-time puzzle race where players use polyomino pieces to recreate a shape shown on their individual puzzle card before the sand timer runs out. Whoever solves their puzzle first moves ahead on the scoring track, collecting gems tied to their position. Over nine rounds, players race against the clock and each other, and whoever collects the most gems of a single color wins. It's a colorful, energetic puzzle game that keeps everyone racing simultaneously.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli enjoys Ubongo's real-time energy: everyone is puzzling at once, so there's essentially no downtime, and the shape-fitting challenge is genuinely satisfying to crack under pressure. It works well across a wide age range and even has a solid solo mode. Just know it leans on quick spatial reasoning under time pressure rather than long-term strategy.

What we like

  • Exciting real-time puzzle-solving that keeps everyone active simultaneously.
  • Very low downtime since all players race at once.
  • Simple, colorful components appeal to a wide age range.
  • Solo mode extends replayability outside groups.

Keep in mind

  • Real-time pressure may stress players who prefer relaxed pacing.
  • Die roll determines which row of pieces you can use, adding luck.
  • Limited long-term strategic depth once patterns become familiar.

Who it's for

Great for families of 1-4 players, ages 8+, who enjoy fast-paced spatial puzzles.
