About the game
Carolus Magnus is an abstract area-control game set in medieval Europe, where players vie for control over hexagonal territories using mercenary blocks. Bid for control of specific mercenary types or place blocks strategically to bolster your position on the board. Once you hold a majority on a territory, you can build a tower there to lock in control and move closer to victory. Combining hexagons into larger controlled regions makes your position harder for rivals to contest. The first player to build enough towers - or hold the most when the map shrinks - wins.
Hobbli's Notes
Carolus Magnus, designed by Leo Colovini, is a clever slice of abstract area-majority gaming wrapped in light medieval theming. The mercenary-bidding mechanic adds a nice layer of tactical maneuvering on top of straightforward territory control. It's a lesser-known title compared to some of Colovini's other designs, but fans of area-majority abstracts should find plenty to like. Its modular board and team-based options add some welcome variety for repeat plays.
What we like
- Clever mercenary-bidding mechanic layered on area control.
- Modular board setup adds variety across plays.
- Supports team-based play for added social dynamics.
- Solid one-hour playtime for its strategic depth.
Keep in mind
- Thin theme typical of abstract strategy games.
- Lesser-known title with a smaller community and fewer resources.
- Area-majority tension may frustrate players new to the genre.
Who it's for
Good for abstract strategy fans aged 12+ who enjoy area-majority and territory control games with 2-4 players.
