About the game
Commands & Colors: Ancients recreates stylized battles from the Dawn of Military History through the Dark Ages, including famous clashes like Cannae and Zama. Players use command cards to direct sections of their army, creating a genuine fog of war as you never have full control over every unit at once. Combat is resolved quickly with custom battle dice, keeping the pace brisk despite the historical depth. Across fifteen scenarios, terrain and historical unit deployment shape distinct tactical puzzles each time. It's a celebrated entry point into card-driven historical wargaming.
Hobbli's Notes
This is a wargamer's favorite for good reason: the command card system forces tough choices about which part of your line to actually activate, and the dice combat keeps things moving fast. It manages to feel authentically historical without bogging down in fiddly rules. Most scenarios wrap up in under an hour, which is rare for the genre. A must-try for anyone curious about card-driven wargames.
