About the game

BattleLore reimagines the Hundred Years War in a Medieval Europe where French and English armies are supplemented by Goblins, Dwarves, and other fantastical mercenaries. Built on Richard Borg's Command and Colors system, players use command cards to maneuver troops across a modular hex battlefield, resolving combat with dice. Wizards, clerics, warriors, and rogues serve as Lore Masters, granting unique powers and spells. Strictly a two-player game, it blends historical wargaming with a dose of epic fantasy.

Hobbli's Notes

BattleLore is a strong, accessible entry point into the acclaimed Command and Colors system, using the historical Hundred Years War as a backdrop for some light fantasy flair. The card-driven command system keeps tactical decisions sharp without overwhelming rules overhead. Some fans of the straight historical originals found the fantasy additions less compelling, but as a two-player tactical wargame it holds up well.

What we like

  • Accessible entry point into the acclaimed Command and Colors system.
  • Fun blend of historical armies with light fantasy elements.
  • Card-driven command system creates real tactical decision-making.
  • Strong replayability through scenarios and expansions.

Keep in mind

  • Strictly two-player, which limits flexibility for larger groups.
  • Dice-based combat introduces luck that can frustrate tacticians.
  • Miniature setup and rules overhead take some time.
