About the game

Cathedral is a classic two-player abstract strategy game where each side places uniquely shaped building pieces onto a shared board, trying to claim as much territory as possible. After a neutral Cathedral piece is placed first, players alternate adding buildings until no more moves are possible, capturing territory by surrounding it with their own or neutral pieces. Captured areas become off-limits to the opponent, and the player who places the fewest unplaced 'square units' at the end wins. First published in 1979, it's a quick, elegant territorial puzzle for two players.

Hobbli's Notes

Cathedral has stayed in print for decades because its rules are wonderfully simple while the territorial puzzle underneath is genuinely tricky: every placement can open or close off swaths of the board. It's an ideal gateway abstract game for players who like chess-adjacent thinking without a steep learning curve.

What we like

  • Simple rules hide a genuinely deep territorial puzzle.
  • Quick 20-minute playtime makes it easy to play multiple rounds.
  • Beautiful, tactile building pieces add to the experience.
  • Decades of print history prove its lasting appeal.

Keep in mind

  • Strictly two-player, so it can't accommodate larger groups.
  • Abstract theme may not appeal to players who want narrative or luck.
  • Limited variability between games for those seeking high replay variance.

Who it's for
