About the game

Fjords is a two-phase tile-laying game set in a stunning Scandinavian landscape. Players first explore the fjords by laying hexagonal terrain tiles to build the map, then begin from their placed longhouses to walk the landscape and claim as much plains and cliffside territory as possible. Savvy tile placement and the ability to plan ahead while still adapting tactically determine who claims the most land. This updated edition supports up to four players and adds five new variant modules for extra variety.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's team enjoys Fjords for its elegant two-phase structure -- building the board is nearly as satisfying as playing on it. The area-claiming phase rewards spatial reasoning without overwhelming complexity. It's a lovely-looking game that plays quickly, making it easy to bring to the table repeatedly. The new variant modules add welcome replay value for veteran players.

What we like

  • Unique two-phase structure of building then claiming territory.
  • Beautiful Scandinavian-themed tile artwork.
  • Quick forty-five-minute playtime suits many occasions.
  • New variant modules add replayability for veteran players.

Keep in mind

  • Early tile placement can lock in disadvantages for later players.
  • Territory-claiming phase may feel abstract for narrative-focused players.
  • Two-player games can play differently than the fuller four-player experience.
