About the game
Polis is a two-player civilization-lite wargame set during the dawn of the Peloponnesian War, pitting Athens and the Delian League against Sparta and its Peloponnesian allies. Players compete to grow population and prestige by securing supply routes to five trading markets while managing feeding and military logistics. Combat, sieges, and diplomacy all come into play as you fight to control territories or convince rival city-states to join your league. With updated rules and new art in this edition, it's a tight strategic duel over the ancient Mediterranean.
Hobbli's Notes
Polis threads the needle between wargame and economic engine, giving two players a genuinely tense tug-of-war over territory, trade, and prestige. The market and supply mechanics add an economic dimension that pure conflict-focused wargames often lack. At two hours and a fairly high complexity, it rewards players willing to learn its many interlocking systems. A great choice for two-player groups looking for a meatier historical strategy game.
What we like
- Combines wargame conflict with economic trade-route management.
- Historical Peloponnesian War theme is richly represented.
- Diplomacy option adds an alternative path to territorial control.
- Relatively low downtime for a game of this complexity.
Keep in mind
- High complexity and long playtime require a dedicated two-player group.
- Strictly two players limits its use for larger game nights.
- Historical wargame systems may feel dense to newcomers.
Who it's for
Best for two experienced strategy gamers ages 14+ who enjoy historical wargames with an economic layer.
