About the game
Sekigahara: The Unification of Japan is a two-player block wargame recreating the decisive 1600 campaign that unified Japan under Tokugawa rule. Using wooden blocks to represent hidden armies and cards to represent loyalty and motivation, players maneuver forces across a point-to-point map, sparking battles that are won by winning over the enemy's own troops rather than eliminating them. With no dice and a compact rulebook, it delivers deep historical tension through elegant, clean mechanisms.
Hobbli's Notes
Sekigahara is a fantastic entry point into block wargames precisely because its rules are so lean - the tension comes from hidden information and bluffing rather than fiddly combat charts. The card-driven loyalty system is a clever and thematic touch that makes every battle about morale as much as muscle.
What we like
- Elegant rules for a deeply strategic wargame.
- No dice - outcomes come from cards and bluffing.
- Beautiful, thematic block-and-map components.
- Fast-resolving battles keep the pace brisk despite the depth.
Keep in mind
- Strictly two-player only, limiting group flexibility.
- Wargame conventions may be unfamiliar to newer gamers.
- Three-hour playtime is a real commitment.
Who it's for
Best for ages 14+, two-player strategy gamers and history/wargame enthusiasts looking for a focused head-to-head experience.
