About the game
Noctiluca sends players diving into glowing waters represented by 104 colorful translucent dice, collecting bioluminescent creatures to deliver to healers across the land. Players take turns diving in from the shore's edge, gathering dice from the shared pool and storing them safely in jars until delivery. After two rounds, players tally points from successful deliveries, with the highest total winning. A double-sided board also enables a solo mode where the lone diver races to rescue the noctiluca before a looming tempest.
Hobbli's Notes
Noctiluca is a beautifully tactile puzzle -- picking dice from the shimmering pool is genuinely satisfying, and the delivery-contract system adds a light layer of planning without slowing down its brisk 30-minute runtime. Designer Shem Phillips brings the same clean, elegant design sensibility here that fans know from his other titles. A lovely, accessible pick for both families and puzzle-game fans, with a strong solo mode as a bonus.
What we like
- Tactile, satisfying dice-collection mechanic with beautiful components.
- Quick 30-minute playtime with light but meaningful planning.
- Strong solo mode via a double-sided game board.
- Accessible rules suitable for families and casual players.
Keep in mind
- Light complexity may not satisfy players wanting a deeper strategic challenge.
- Component-heavy design (104 dice) requires storage and setup space.
