About the game

Explorers of the North Sea sends Viking-age sea captains out to settle newly discovered islands, transporting crews to capture livestock, construct outposts, and complete other goals. Each turn, players place a tile to expand the shared island board, then take up to four actions such as loading and unloading their longship, raiding settlements, or constructing outposts. The game ends after all 48 tiles have been placed, with victory points awarded for delivered livestock, outposts, destroyed enemy ships, raids, and controlled islands. Designed by Shem Phillips, it's part of his celebrated North Sea trilogy of Viking-themed strategy games.

Hobbli's Notes

Explorers of the North Sea has a wonderfully organic feel: the shared island grows differently every game as players lay tiles, creating genuine spatial puzzles around movement and delivery routes. The variety of scoring paths means multiple viable strategies each session. A standout entry in Phillips' North Sea series and a great pick for fans of tile-laying, pick-up-and-deliver games.

What we like

  • Part of a well-regarded, thematically cohesive Viking trilogy.

Keep in mind

  • Tile-drawing luck can affect available expansion options.
  • Action-point efficiency can create some analysis paralysis.
