About the game
Coimbra sends players into Renaissance-era Portugal to curry favor with the city's monasteries, expeditions, and influential citizens. Each round you draft dice that do double or triple duty: determining turn order, activating citizen abilities, and paying costs all at once. Balancing your dice choices against the changing pool of citizens, monasteries, and expeditions makes every round a fresh puzzle. Multiple viable paths to victory reward planning several turns ahead. It's a richly thematic Eurogame with an unusually clever dice-drafting engine at its core.
Hobbli's Notes
Coimbra's dice-drafting is one of the more inventive mechanisms in recent Eurogame design: the way a single die can affect turn order, action, and payment all at once makes every draft matter. The interlocking systems reward players who plan ahead, though newcomers may need a full game to get comfortable with everything happening at once. It's a satisfying heavier Eurogame for groups who enjoy engine-building and synergy-hunting. A strong choice for fans of Grand Austria Hotel or Marco Polo.
