About the game

Civolution casts players as local deities guiding a humanoid civilization through a final exam in cultural, technical, and evolutionary development. Using a dice-selection mechanism, players trigger actions along a tech-tree-like structure, choosing between paths like cultural progress or evolutionary adaptation as they build out their civilization over four eras. Unique cards add asymmetric strategies, meaning each playthrough only explores a fraction of the game's many possible development paths. A companion solo automa mode is available for players who want to test their civilization-building skills alone.

Hobbli's Notes

Civolution is a dense, ambitious design that fits squarely into designer Stefan Feld's tradition of heavy, interlocking euro systems. The dice-driven tech-tree structure rewards careful long-term planning, and the sheer volume of cards and paths promises strong replayability for dedicated groups. As a newer, very heavy title, it's best approached by experienced euro-gamers ready to invest real time in learning its many interacting systems.

What we like

  • The dice-selection tech-tree system offers a deep, satisfying puzzle.
  • A huge variety of cards and paths supports strong long-term replayability.
  • A dedicated solo automa mode extends the game beyond group play.
  • Multiple viable strategies emerge from each unique card mix.

Keep in mind

  • The rules and system interactions are heavy for newcomers.
  • Playtime is long, especially while still learning the game.
  • The civilization theme feels more abstract than deeply thematic.
  • Requires real investment before its strategic depth becomes clear.

Who it's for

Best for experienced euro-gamers ages 14+ who enjoy heavy tech-tree civilization-building, playable solo or in groups of up to 4.
