About the game

Gunkimono places players as feudal daimyo maneuvering troops across a war-torn Japanese countryside. Using hand management and tile placement, you recruit soldiers and build strongholds, all while deciding whether to bank victory points now or invest in a bigger payoff later. The enclosure and layering mechanics reward careful territory shaping over the game's rounds. Balancing military growth against your rivals' ambitions is key, since letting anyone's army grow unchecked can be costly. It's a mid-weight territory-building game with a strong feudal Japan theme.

Hobbli's Notes

Gunkimono offers a satisfying push-your-luck tension between banking points immediately or building toward a bigger stronghold payoff. Hobbli's team likes the tile-laying puzzle of expanding territory while watching opponents' armies grow. At around an hour, it's meaty enough to feel substantial without overstaying its welcome. The historical Japanese setting adds nice thematic texture to otherwise abstract territory mechanics.

What we like

  • Interesting risk-reward banking decisions.
  • Solid tile-placement and enclosure puzzle.
  • Strong feudal Japan theme.
  • Scales well from 2 to 5 players.

Keep in mind

  • Downtime can build with more players.
  • Some rules overhead for a mid-weight game.
  • Scoring can feel abstract relative to the theme.
