About the game

Bruges puts players in the shoes of 15th-century merchants navigating power, prosperity, and dramatic city events in a wealthy Belgian trading city. Each turn, a player chooses one of many character cards, with the card's color determining what actions are available and how strong they are. Threats loom over the city that players must mitigate while also building canals, houses, and hiring influential characters to increase their prestige. Designed by Stefan Feld, its multi-use card system rewards flexible, tightly optimized play. It plays with 2 to 4 players in about an hour.

Hobbli's Notes

Classic Feld design with a genuinely clever multi-use card system. Every card can serve multiple purposes depending on color, which creates satisfying tension in every decision.

What we like

  • Clever multi-use card system rewards flexible planning.
  • Tight, satisfying strategic decisions every turn.
  • Good replayability from the variety of character cards.
  • Manageable one-hour playtime for its strategic depth.

Keep in mind

  • Dice-based threat events add an element of luck.
  • Somewhat dry theme layered over abstract mechanisms.
  • Players prone to analysis paralysis can slow the game down.
