About the game

The Expanse Board Game brings the politics, conquest, and intrigue of the acclaimed Syfy television series to the table in a card-driven strategy game reminiscent of Twilight Struggle, but with a shorter playtime. Players represent Earth's UN forces, the Martian military, the O.P.A. rebels, or the mysterious Protogen Inc., each with unique special abilities. Using action points and event cards, players place and move Fleets and Influence across the solar system to outmaneuver rivals. It's a tense, thematic clash of competing factions vying for control.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editors appreciate how well this captures The Expanse's political tension in a more accessible format than sprawling COIN-style games. The asymmetric factions each play distinctly, giving strong replay value for card-driven game fans. Licensed theme aside, it stands on its own as a solid area-control conflict game for groups who enjoy shorter Twilight Struggle-style experiences.

What we like

  • Faithfully captures The Expanse's political intrigue and factional conflict.
  • Asymmetric factions each play with distinct abilities.
  • Shorter playtime than comparable card-driven area-control games.
  • Strong thematic integration of show imagery and events.

Keep in mind

  • Licensed theme may hold less appeal for non-fans of the show.
  • Card-driven area control can feel opaque to newcomers.
  • Catch-the-leader mechanics can lead to pile-on dynamics.

Who it's for

Great for 2-4 players aged 14+ who enjoy card-driven area control games, licensed sci-fi themes, and political conflict.
