About the game

Cold War: CIA vs. KGB is a two-player card game of espionage set in the aftermath of World War II, as the USA and USSR vie to spread their ideology across a divided world. Players manipulate local factions of influence, push coup d'états forward, and use bluffing and simultaneous action selection to outmaneuver their rival's spy network. Prestige can also be earned outside direct confrontation, through winning the Space Race, dominating the Olympics, or securing a Nobel Peace Prize for your side. Victory goes to whichever superpower better manages resources, timing, and nerve over the long Cold War struggle.

Hobbli's Notes

Cold War: CIA vs. KGB packs a surprising amount of bluffing tension into a tight two-player card game, with simultaneous action selection keeping both players guessing about the other's next move. Its mix of direct confrontation and softer prestige tracks like the Space Race gives it more texture than a straightforward area-control duel. At a brisk 60 minutes, it's an efficient way to get real Cold War-era spy-versus-spy tension on the table without a lengthy commitment.

What we like

  • Simultaneous action selection creates real bluffing tension between two players.
  • Multiple paths to prestige beyond direct confrontation add strategic variety.
  • Compact 60-minute playtime suits a focused two-player session.
  • Cold War espionage theme is well realized through push-your-luck and secret deployment mechanics.
  • Low complexity rating keeps it approachable for newer strategy gamers.
