About the game

Discoveries: The Journals of Lewis & Clark reimagines the classic exploration-and-discovery game with new dice-based mechanics. Playing as one of the expedition's leaders, you roll dice to prepare and perform exploration actions, gather knowledge from tribes you encounter, and record discoveries in your journal. Smart dice management lets you manipulate the shared pool, taking dice from the board or even from opponents' action areas. Discovery cards accumulate throughout the game to score points at the end, rewarding players who best chart the unknown American frontier. Vincent Dutrait's evocative artwork brings the historic 1803-1806 expedition vividly to life.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's team likes how this design streamlines the original Discoveries into a tighter, more accessible dice-driven experience. The interaction of manipulating shared dice pools creates satisfying tactical decisions each round. It hits a nice complexity sweet spot for gamers who want meaningful choices without heavy rules overhead. The historical theme and artwork add welcome atmosphere to the euro-style engine.

What we like

  • Clever dice manipulation adds tactical depth to a euro framework.
  • Attractive historical theme with strong artwork.
  • Accessible complexity for a medium-weight strategy game.
  • Good player interaction through dice-stealing actions.

Keep in mind

  • Theme is somewhat abstracted from actual mechanics.
  • Can feel repetitive over multiple plays.
  • Downtime possible when players plan complex dice combos.

Who it's for

Great for teens and adults (14+) who enjoy medium-weight euro games with dice manipulation; works well for 3-4 players.
