About the game

Alchemists puts two to four players in the role of budding alchemists racing to publish correct theories about the properties of eight mysterious ingredients. Using worker placement and a companion smartphone app to reveal the hidden truth, players experiment with ingredients, sell (or misrepresent) potions to adventurers, and buy powerful artifacts, all while trying to keep their reputation intact. Deduction is central: you must piece together the rules of alchemy through careful, costly testing before publishing theories worth real points. It's a cerebral, high-complexity game for gamers who love puzzles wrapped in a satisfying theme.

Hobbli's Notes

Alchemists is a standout deduction game because the app removes any possibility of misapplying random ingredient effects, keeping the logic puzzle scrupulously fair. The tension between testing cautiously and racing to publish theories before rivals is genuinely gripping. At heavy complexity and two hours of playtime, though, it demands real commitment and works best with a table that enjoys deep, slower-paced thinking. Reputation swings can also feel harsh for players who guess wrong.

What we like

  • The companion app enforces a fair, rigorous deduction puzzle.
  • Rich theme of alchemical experimentation feels genuinely immersive.
  • High replayability since ingredient properties randomize each game.
  • Rewards careful logical deduction over pure luck.
  • Multiple paths to victory through theories, artifacts, and potion sales.

Keep in mind

  • High complexity and long playtime can be a barrier for casual groups.
  • Requires a smartphone or tablet to play properly.
  • Reputation losses from wrong guesses can feel punishing.
  • Significant downtime while other players plan their actions.

Who it's for

Best suited to experienced strategy gamers, ages 12 and up, who enjoy deduction and heavier worker-placement games in groups of 2-4.
