About the game

Viceroy is a bidding and resource management game set in the fantasy world of the Russian CCG Berserk, where players recruit allies and enact laws to build a personal power pyramid. Each character or law card's effect depends on which level of the pyramid it occupies, so timing and placement matter as much as acquiring the right cards. Resources gained fuel further recruitment, military might, and magical power as players race toward the most power points. The player who accumulates the most power becomes ruler of the land of Laar.

Hobbli's Notes

The pyramid-building puzzle is genuinely clever, rewarding players who spot strong card synergies. It's a bit of a hidden gem for fans of card-driven engine building, though its fantasy IP is less familiar in the West.

What we like

  • Unique pyramid-building placement mechanism.
  • Rewarding card synergies to discover over multiple plays.
  • Reasonable 60-minute playtime for its depth.
  • Striking fantasy artwork and card design.

Keep in mind

  • Auction and bidding elements can be swingy.
  • A memory component may frustrate some players.
  • Source material and IP are unfamiliar to many Western players.

Who it's for

Suited to fans of card-driven engine building and fantasy themes aged 13+, in groups of 2-4.
