About the game

Innovation is Carl Chudyk's rapid-fire tableau-building card game that traces the arc of civilization from prehistory to the near future using only cards. Each of the game's ten or eleven ages introduces new technologies with unique effects that let you elevate your own society or strike at your opponents. Sharing icons across the table means rivals can benefit from your inventions, so managing your visible tableau is as important as building it. Victory comes from claiming achievements tied to points or specific milestones. No two games play the same way.

Hobbli's Notes

A brilliantly clever, brain-bending design. The splaying and sharing mechanics create wild swings and constant recalculation, which some players find thrilling and others find dizzying, so know your group.

What we like

  • Enormous replayability from unique card interactions across ages.
  • Quick setup and teardown for a game with real strategic depth.
  • Compact card-only footprint travels easily.
  • Rewards clever combos and forward planning.
  • Scales well across the full 2-5 player range.

Keep in mind

  • Card text creates a steep learning curve for new players.
  • Sudden swings from shared icons can feel chaotic or unfair.
  • Take-that elements may frustrate players who dislike direct conflict.
