About the game

Capitol casts players as architects competing to build the most spectacular structures across ancient Rome's prefectures. Over four rounds, you construct buildings of varying heights, bid for temples, wells, and amphitheaters in an auction phase, and score points based on your buildings' completeness and placement. Roofs determine a prefecture's building style, adding a shared visual and strategic puzzle to the table. The architect who best balances building and bidding wins.

Hobbli's Notes

Capitol is an underrated Alan Moon and Aaron Weissblum design that blends area-majority building with a clever auction phase. The interplay between claiming prefectures and bidding for bonus structures creates real tension across its four rounds. It's a handsome, moderately weighty euro that rewards players who enjoy a mix of construction and negotiation-adjacent bidding.

What we like

  • Auction phase adds a layer of tension beyond building.
  • Attractive components and Roman theme.
  • Four-round structure keeps the game to a reasonable length.
  • Rewards balancing multiple scoring paths.

Keep in mind

  • Moderate-to-high downtime during other players' turns.
  • Rules can take a session to fully click.
  • Out-of-print status makes it harder to find.

Who it's for

Good for euro-strategy fans 10+ who enjoy building and auction mechanics, best with 2-4 players in about an hour.
