About the game
Taj Mahal is a classic Reiner Knizia game set in 18th-century northwest India, where players compete for regional influence and royal favor through a series of card-based auctions. Each round, players bid using colored cards to win control of regions or the support of key court figures, building palaces and collecting valuable commodities to accumulate influence points. Its unique multi-track bidding system, where players can only play one color per round, creates constant tension over when to commit and when to fold.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's team regards Taj Mahal as one of Knizia's finest auction designs, thanks to the elegant restriction of playing only one card color per turn, which forces genuinely hard trade-off decisions. The map-based palace building adds a satisfying spatial layer on top of the bidding tension. A true classic for fans of clever, cutthroat bidding games.
What we like
- Elegant single-color-per-round bidding creates constant tough decisions.
- Rewarding palace-building bonuses for connecting regions.
- Considered a modern classic among Knizia's auction designs.
- The 2018 edition adds solid two-player rules for smaller groups.
Keep in mind
- Heavy player conflict can feel harsh for newer or cautious players.
- Auction-based scoring can create swingy, unpredictable outcomes.
Who it's for
Best for experienced gamers aged 12+ who enjoy auction and bidding games with real player conflict; plays well with 2-5 players in about 90 minutes.
