About the game
Amun-Re casts players as leaders of rival Egyptian dynasties who bid for control of provinces along the Nile in order to farm, trade, and ultimately build pyramids. The game unfolds across two identical halves, each ending in a full scoring, so an early lead is never permanent. Players use power cards to shape their auctions and must offer regular sacrifices to Amun-Re to keep their favor. Whoever builds the most pyramids and earns the most points across both halves wins.
Hobbli's Notes
Amun-Re is a sharp, classic Reiner Knizia auction design where the two-phase scoring structure keeps every player in contention until the very end. The bidding for provinces is tense and full of hard trade-offs between short-term farming income and long-term pyramid building. Its main drawback is downtime, particularly with a full table, as players wait through multiple rounds of bidding.
What we like
- Clever auction system creates meaningful economic trade-offs.
- Two-phase scoring keeps the whole game competitive to the end.
- Variable province tiles add strong replayability.
- Deep Knizia-style tension between short-term and long-term plays.
Keep in mind
- Significant downtime, especially with more players at the table.
- Heavy auction focus can lead to analysis paralysis.
- Rules and scoring take some effort for new players to fully grasp.
Who it's for
Fans of auction-driven economic euro games, best suited to experienced players ages 12 and up in groups of 3 to 5.
