About the game

Witch of Salem is a cooperative game based on Wolfgang Hohlbein's Lovecraft-inspired novels, tasking players with sealing eight gates in Arkham before the Great Old One awakens. Working together but under strict communication limits, you'll banish monsters, gather items, and race the doom-track before madness or monsters overwhelm the group. Victory requires uncovering the Old One's identity and matching the right combination of items to banish it.

Hobbli's Notes

This is a solid cooperative horror game for fans of Lovecraftian themes who want something a bit shorter than Arkham Horror. The communication-limit rule adds real tension since you can't simply plan everything out loud, forcing tougher cooperative decisions. Downtime can build up in the higher player counts, so it shines best with a focused group of two or three.

What we like

  • Cooperative play with communication restrictions creates real tension.
  • Lovecraftian theme delivers strong atmosphere.
  • Variety of ways to win keeps sessions from feeling formulaic.
  • Good production with figures and thematic components.

Keep in mind

  • Higher downtime can slow the pace at full player count.
  • Rules and setup take some time to learn.
  • Can feel swingy if the doom-track runs out unexpectedly.

Who it's for

Great for horror and cooperative-game fans 10+, best played in groups of 2-4 who enjoy Lovecraftian themes and communication puzzles.
