About the game
2 de Mayo is a compact two-player wargame recreating the civilian uprising against Napoleon's occupying forces in Madrid on May 2, 1808. One player commands the French occupation troops while the other leads Spanish civilians and army units across ten fast-moving turns of preparation, orders, movement, and resolution. Victory hinges on the French either eliminating Spanish forces and securing Madrid's access points, or the Spanish holding out. Bilingual components and a tight rules structure make this history-driven skirmish playable in about 20-30 minutes. Its area-control map of old Madrid gives the conflict a strong sense of place.
Hobbli's Notes
This is a tidy little history wargame that packs real tension into a short runtime: rare for the genre. The event cards add welcome unpredictability to what could otherwise be a dry area-control exercise. It's a niche pick best suited to players already comfortable with wargame conventions rather than a gateway title.
What we like
- Quick playtime of around 20-30 minutes for a wargame.
- Tight two-player asymmetric historical conflict.
- Event cards add unpredictability to each playthrough.
- Simultaneous action selection keeps both players engaged.
Keep in mind
- Asymmetric factions may feel unbalanced without practice.
- Thin production compared to larger wargame releases.
- Niche appeal that may not suit non-wargamers.
Who it's for
Best for two players ages 12 and up who enjoy quick historical wargames and tactical movement.
