About the game

Java, the second game in Michael Kiesling and Wolfgang Kramer's celebrated Mask Trilogy, has players developing the fertile, undeveloped heart of Java into rice fields, villages, palaces, and cities. Using action points, players irrigate land, build structures, and enlarge palaces to earn fame points, competing to be the dominant cultural force in the region. Layering tiles carefully to maximize their footprint is central to the game's tight area majority scoring. Whoever accumulates the most fame at the final scoring wins.

Hobbli's Notes

A tight, elegant classic euro from two of the genre's most respected designers. The layered tile placement remains a genuinely clever puzzle even decades after release.

What we like

  • Elegant layered tile placement mechanism.
  • Tight, meaningful area majority scoring.
  • Part of the acclaimed and influential Mask Trilogy.
  • Rewards long-term spatial planning and efficiency.

Keep in mind

  • Components and production feel dated for some players.
  • Thematic presentation is fairly dry and abstract.
  • Playtime runs long for its overall weight.

Who it's for

Best for euro-gamers aged 12+ who enjoy classic tile-laying and area majority games, in groups of 2-4.
