About the game
Tikal sends players deep into Central American jungles to uncover lost temples and treasures using a limited pool of action points each turn. As explorers reveal more terrain tiles, players jockey for majority control of temples while racing to claim treasures before rivals. The tense action-point allowance system means every move matters, and auctions and layering add extra layers of strategic tension. First in the acclaimed Mask Trilogy, Tikal set a high bar for area-control exploration games. It supports 2 to 4 players over roughly 90 minutes.
Hobbli's Notes
A genuine modern classic. The action-point allowance system still feels tight and tense today, and the exploration theme gives every game session a real sense of jungle discovery.
What we like
- Innovative action-point allowance system creates constant tension.
- Tight area-control competition over temples and treasures.
- Rewarding exploration theme as the jungle unfolds tile by tile.
- An award-winning design that remains influential decades later.
Keep in mind
- Blocking and majority-stealing can frustrate players who dislike direct conflict.
- Downtime between turns can add up in longer sessions.
- Original components feel dated compared to modern reprints.
Who it's for
Strategy gamers who enjoy area control and exploration themes, ages 10 and up, in groups of 2-4.
