About the game

HeroQuest Advanced Quest Edition is Milton Bradley's classic Dungeons & Dragons-inspired adventure game, where one player serves as game master while up to four others play a wizard, elf, dwarf, or barbarian exploring dungeons on fantasy quests. Miniature plastic figures and doll-house-style furniture bring the dungeon to life as the game master reveals the maze piecemeal. This Advanced Quest edition adds twelve new 'black guard' miniatures with interchangeable weapons and a new thirteen-part adventure called The Dark Company. Games run about 90 minutes and are designed to work alongside the base HeroQuest box and its other expansions.

Hobbli's Notes

HeroQuest is a genuine classic that introduced a generation of players to dungeon-crawling adventure games, and this Advanced Quest edition adds welcome extra content for fans of the system. The game master versus heroes structure is simple to teach and creates a fun, story-driven dynamic even for younger players. It's mechanically simple by modern standards, leaning on dice more than tactics, but that simplicity is part of its enduring charm. This is a great nostalgic pick for families introducing kids to fantasy adventure gaming.

What we like

  • Classic dungeon-master-versus-heroes gameplay is easy to teach.
  • Beloved miniatures and dungeon-tile aesthetic.
  • Strong nostalgic appeal as an entry point into fantasy adventure gaming.
  • Expandable with additional quests and content.

Keep in mind

  • Mechanics feel simplistic compared to modern dungeon crawlers.
  • One player must always take on the game master role.
  • Heavy reliance on dice can undercut tactical choices.

Who it's for

Great for families and fantasy adventure fans introducing younger players to dungeon crawling, ages 10 and up, in groups of two to five.
