About the game
Descent: Journeys in the Dark is a one-vs-many dungeon crawler where up to four heroes cooperate to explore dungeons, battle monsters, and seize treasure while one player commands the Overlord, controlling traps and monsters to destroy the party. Heroes choose from a wide variety of characters with unique skills, aiming to complete scenario objectives before losing too many Conquest Points. With miniatures, modular boards, and a long 240-minute playtime, it delivers a sprawling dungeon-crawl RPG experience within a board game format. Its asymmetric team-based structure creates a dynamic push-and-pull between the cooperating heroes and their opponent.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's team sees Descent as a foundational dungeon-crawler that scratches the tabletop-RPG itch without needing a dedicated game master beyond the Overlord player. The variable player powers and miniature combat give it strong tactical depth, though sessions run long and demand real commitment. It rewards groups who enjoy immersive fantasy adventures over multiple sittings. Later editions streamlined some of this game's clunkier mechanics, but this original still has a loyal following.
