About the game

Runebound: Second Edition is a classic fantasy adventure game from Fantasy Flight Games in which heroes explore the land of Terrinoth, battling monsters and gathering equipment in a race to defeat the mighty Dragonlord Margath. It uses a terrain-based dice movement system and staged Adventure Decks that ramp up the challenge as characters level up. Playable competitively or with little direct player conflict, and it supports 2-6 players plus a solo mode. It's expandable through numerous adventure packs and big-box expansions that alter the map and final boss.

Hobbli's Notes

Runebound is a nostalgic favorite for many gamers who cut their teeth on FFG's early adventure games, but its long playtime and heavier randomness can feel dated next to more modern designs. Still, the atmosphere and variable questing make it a rewarding slow-burn adventure for fans of the genre.

What we like

  • Rich fantasy theme and exploration
  • Highly expandable with many adventure packs
  • Playable solo or with minimal conflict
  • Character leveling gives satisfying progression

Keep in mind

  • Long playtime of up to 4 hours
  • Heavy dice randomness in combat
  • Can feel like a solitaire race rather than interactive play

Who it's for

Great for fantasy-loving groups of 2-6 players ages 12+ who enjoy long, semi-cooperative adventure games with dice-driven combat.
