About the game

Hacienda sends players onto the South American pampas to buy land and animal cards, laying tiles to build herds and claim territory. Herds that reach market towns earn money based on their size, and extra investments like waterholes and haciendas grant bonus points. With only three actions per turn, deciding whether to buy known cards or gamble on the draw deck is a constant tension. Scoring happens at the midpoint and end of the game, rewarding whoever best balances land, herds, and infrastructure.

Hobbli's Notes

A classic Kramer design that rewards efficient tile-laying and route-building. It's a bit dry thematically, but the network-building puzzle is genuinely satisfying for euro fans.

What we like

  • Elegant tile-laying and network-building puzzle.
  • Meaningful decisions in the card-buying economy.
  • Double-sided board adds long-term replayability.
  • Rewards careful long-term planning over quick wins.

Keep in mind

  • Can feel abstract and dry thematically.
  • Somewhat long for a game of its complexity level.
  • Blocking opponents' land can create some frustration.

Who it's for

Ideal for euro-gamers aged 10+ who enjoy network-building and set collection, in groups of 2-5.
