About the game

Friedrich: Anniversary Edition recreates the desperate struggle of Frederick the Great's Prussia against an allied Europe during the Seven Years' War. One player commands Prussia's outnumbered forces while opponents represent the coalition powers converging to crush it. A unique hybrid of board and card game systems governs movement and tactics, with clever use of cards proving decisive to victory. This anniversary edition refreshes the original with new cover art, revised map details, and clarified rules.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editorial team appreciates Friedrich for its clever card-driven tactics and historical grounding, and for the fact that it avoids traditional player elimination in favor of country elimination: a subtle but important distinction. It's a demanding, lengthy wargame that rewards patience and careful reading of your opponents' cards. This is very much a niche title for dedicated wargamers rather than a casual pick, and its long playtime and high downtime mean it needs a committed group. We'd flag this one for review given how specialized its audience is.

What we like

  • Innovative hybrid of board and card game mechanics.
  • Strong historical theming grounded in real Seven Years' War events.
  • No traditional player elimination keeps everyone engaged.
  • High replayability through variable card-driven tactics.

Keep in mind

  • Very long 210-minute playtime demands a big commitment.
  • High downtime between turns can be tough for less patient players.
  • Steep learning curve typical of complex historical wargames.

Who it's for

Best for dedicated wargamers aged 12+ in groups of 3-4 who enjoy long, historically themed strategy games.
