About the game

Fate: Defenders of Grimheim is a cooperative miniatures game set in Norse mythology, where players take on unproven heroes defending Freyja's sacred well against waves of trolls, undead, and fire-horde monsters. As monsters advance from every side of the board, players kill enemies to gain experience, solve quests for new weapons and equipment, and work together to keep the village from being destroyed. The game ends in victory if Freyja's Well still stands when she returns, or in defeat if the town falls first. With grid-based movement, variable hero powers, and dice-driven combat, it delivers a thematic dungeon-crawl-style cooperative experience.

Hobbli's Notes

Fate leans into its Norse mythology setting with real thematic weight, and the mounting monster pressure from all directions makes for tense cooperative sessions. The variable hero powers and quest-solving give a satisfying sense of character progression across a game. As a newer release, we haven't yet seen how it holds up over many plays compared to established dungeon-crawlers. Best suited to groups who enjoy longer, miniature-driven cooperative adventures.

What we like

  • Strong Norse mythology theme with escalating monster pressure.
  • Variable hero powers give distinct playstyles.
  • Includes a full solo mode alongside cooperative play.
  • Quest-solving system adds meaningful character progression.

Keep in mind

  • Long two-hour playtime is a big commitment for casual groups.
  • As a new release, long-term replayability is still unproven.
  • Miniature-heavy components add setup time and cost.

Who it's for

Best for cooperative game fans aged 14 and up who enjoy longer, miniatures-driven fantasy adventures, solo or in groups up to 4.
