About the game
In World Wonders, you lead an ancient civilization from a humble settlement into the greatest city in the world. Each round you spend gold to build economy-boosting tiles, lay roads to expand your city, and raise monuments worth valuable victory points. Careful timing is everything: overspend on a monument and your turn ends early, but wait too long and rivals may snatch the best building sites first. After ten rounds, or when a player hits the population cap, the most developed city wins.
Hobbli's Notes
This is a tight, tile-laying economic engine game that rewards efficient gold management over brute-force expansion. Hobbli's team liked how the loan mechanic adds tension to timing decisions, forcing players to gamble on future income. It's a satisfying mid-weight euro for players who enjoy city-building without excessive rules overhead, though the theme stays fairly abstract in practice.
What we like
- Tense gold-management puzzle with meaningful risk/reward via loans.
- Solo mode extends the game's appeal beyond the table.
- Ten-round structure keeps games from overstaying their welcome.
- Multiple viable paths to victory through buildings, roads, and monuments.
Keep in mind
- Theme feels somewhat pasted-on compared to the mechanical depth.
- Drafting/tile availability can create swingy early-game luck.
Who it's for
Good fit for euro-game fans aged 12+ who enjoy tile-placement and city-building; plays well from 1 to 5, with 3 as the sweet spot.
