About the game

Suburbia is a tile-laying city-building game where you develop your borough from a small town into a bustling metropolis. Using hex-shaped building tiles, you'll add residential, commercial, civic, and industrial zones while balancing your income and reputation tracks. Clever tile placement lets you take advantage of your neighbors' developments as well as your own. The player with the largest population at the end of the game wins, so growing your reputation is key to success. With a different mix of available buildings each session, no two games ever play quite the same.

Hobbli's Notes

Suburbia is a favorite among engine-builders who love watching a simple economy snowball into something impressive. The tile-laying is simple to grasp, but the way income and reputation interact rewards careful long-term planning. We especially appreciate that it plays well solo and scales cleanly up to four. It won't wow players looking for direct conflict or theme immersion, but as a quiet, cerebral building puzzle it's hard to beat.

What we like

  • Rewarding economic engine-building with long-term payoff.
  • High replayability thanks to modular building tiles.
  • Solid solo mode for when you can't get a group together.
  • Elegant rules that are easy to teach despite the depth.

Keep in mind

  • Moderate downtime can slow the pace in larger groups.
  • Catch-the-leader elements can feel punishing to a runaway leader.
  • Scoring math at the end can feel fiddly for newcomers.
  • Limited direct player interaction beyond a shared building pool.

Who it's for

Great for economic-game fans and engine-builders aged 12 and up, ideally in groups of 2-4 who enjoy a slower, strategic pace.
