About the game
The Old King's Crown puts players in the role of heirs vying for control of an overgrown, vacant kingdom. Players move their Herald openly across the map to claim locations while also secretly positioning cards to contest specific regions. Once revealed, these clashes are resolved and reward players with influence and other advantages that further their agenda. The player with the most influence after a set number of rounds is declared the winner.
Hobbli's Notes
Based on its design, The Old King's Crown looks like an inventive mash-up of open area control with secret, simultaneous card resolution, giving it a distinct bluffing edge over typical area-majority games. The variable follower abilities suggest strong asymmetric replayability. As a very new 2025 release, however, we don't yet have the benefit of wide community play to confirm how well its balance and pacing hold up at the table.
What we like
- Unique blend of open Herald movement with secret simultaneous card play.
- Variable faction abilities add asymmetric replayability.
- Thematic conquest setting with meaningful player agendas.
- Bluffing and area-majority combine for genuine table tension.
Keep in mind
- As a brand-new release, long-term balance and replay value are still unproven.
- High complexity may be daunting for more casual players.
- Limited available community data makes some details hard to verify.
Who it's for
Gamers who enjoy bluffing and area-control games, best in groups of 2 to 4 players ages 12 and up.
