About the game
Cyclades is an area-control game set among the mythological Greek islands, where players race to be first to build two cities. Each round, everyone bids simultaneously for the favor of one of five gods, each granting different powers: from moving armies and navies to hiring priests or philosophers. Because only one player can hold each god's favor per turn, bidding creates constant tension over who gets access to key abilities. Mythical monsters can be summoned to devastate rivals, and naval and land combat both play a role in controlling the islands. It's a richly thematic clash of gods, armies, and ambition.
Hobbli's Notes
Cyclades remains a standout area-control game thanks to its unusual bidding-for-divine-favor system, which forces you to balance military ambitions against religious devotion each round. The variety of paths to victory, military, naval, monsters, or buildings, keeps games from feeling repetitive. It can run long with high player counts and occasionally suffers from kingmaker situations, so it's best with a group that doesn't mind some chaos. Still a great pick for fans of mythological area-control games.
