About the game

Legacy of Yu is a solo-only, fully resettable campaign game where you play the legendary hero Yu the Great, building canals to redirect floodwaters while defending your village from barbarian raids. Each playthrough adds story elements and new gameplay pieces through a self-balancing system that adapts to how well you're doing. The campaign concludes after you've won or lost seven games, with your choices shaping the world you build. Designed by Shem Phillips, it's a card-driven engine of chaining actions and multi-use cards. The result is a deeply personal, evolving journey through ancient China.

Hobbli's Notes

A remarkably ambitious solo-only design. The self-balancing difficulty and fully resettable campaign structure mean you can replay it fresh long after finishing the story, which is rare for legacy-style games.

What we like

  • Innovative solo-only campaign that fully resets for replayability.
  • Self-balancing difficulty adapts to player performance.
  • Thematically rich retelling of an ancient Chinese legend.
  • Compact 60-minute sessions make it easy to fit in.
  • Chaining and multi-use card systems reward clever planning.

Keep in mind

  • No multiplayer option at all, which will disappoint group gamers.
  • Requires investment in an ongoing campaign to see its full arc.
  • Some mechanisms may feel repetitive across many replays.
