About the game

King of Monster Island reimagines the King of Tokyo franchise as a full cooperative game, with one to five players controlling giant monsters who must band together to defeat a titan-like Boss before it completes an interdimensional portal. Each turn, players roll dice to damage the boss and its minions, heal, gain energy, and move around the island, while the game itself controls the Boss's actions using the results of dice dropped into a cube tower. Energy earned lets players buy cards and unlock stronger abilities, while human support and rising fame add further layers to the fight. Players must destroy the Boss before it activates its portal or defeats a monster outright, or Earth is lost.

Hobbli's Notes

This is a fun, fresh cooperative spin on the beloved King of Tokyo formula, swapping the usual player-versus-player chaos for a team-versus-boss fight. Richard Garfield's fingerprints are clear in the tight dice-driven action economy, and the cube tower adds a satisfying physical randomness to the boss's attacks. It's an easy, approachable co-op that should appeal to King of Tokyo fans looking for a cooperative alternative.

What we like

  • Fresh cooperative twist on the beloved King of Tokyo ecosystem.
  • Cube tower mechanic adds tactile, unpredictable excitement.
  • Designed by acclaimed game designer Richard Garfield.
  • Scales flexibly from solo play up to five players.

Keep in mind

  • Cube tower randomness can feel swingy and out of players' control.
  • AI-driven boss may feel less dynamic than a human opponent.
  • Kaiju crossover theme may not appeal to every group.

Who it's for

Good for families and cooperative game fans aged 10 and up, playable solo or in groups up to five, especially fans of the King of Tokyo series.
